One Step Ahead Mentorship Applications Due 11/7/08!

Going beyond the peer counseling space, SPEAR's One Step Ahead (OSA) Mentorship program will continue to provide a venue for incoming first year and first year transfers to help ease their transition into UCLA through the utilization of mentors.

Through the "PEAR" (pair) system, 1 mentor (those who have been at UCLA for at least one year) and 1 mentee will gain and learn experiences from one another through academic and personal support.

Through the FAMILY system, 4 or 5 pairs will form one family and further the academic and personal support done through the pairs but with many other mentorship pairs.

Based on SPEAR's 5 student outcomes of peer organzing, health and wellness, self learning, self advocacy, and community service, pairs and families will be able to gain a strong academic and cultural support network while at the same time, form a sense of community. This community shall eventually reflect the community outside UCLA: united and proud.

JFAV Nationwide Mass Actions - A Success

October 13, 2008

LOS ANGELES, Calif.--Bailout the Filipino Veterans, Not the Corrupt Capitalists! No Justice, No Peace.

On Friday, October 10, in Los Angeles and San Francisco, hundreds of Filipino American students, youth and veterans with their allies from AJLPP, ANSWER-LA, PCORE, SIPA, SEIU, LAANE and other groups held their rallies in front of the Federal Building in the two cities for Filipino veterans rights.

Rally Against Racism and Discrimination

Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) and Samahang Pilipino at UCLA led the more than a hundred rallyists in front of the monument to the Spanish-American War at the Westwood Federal Building on 11000 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, from 4 to 7 P.M.

JFAV Coordinator Arturo Garica said, "This monument proved that the United States occupied and colonized the Philippines from 1898 to 1946. Therefore the Filipinos were American soldiers when they fought in World War II. So nobody, and nobody can say that the Filipinos are not American soldiers. And it is unfair and unjust not to recognize them and treat them as mercenaries just what the Congress this year."

In San Francisco, more than 50 JFAV-San Francisco and veterans and students rallied in front of the Federal Building at 450 Golden Gate Avenue downtown. They are pushing for the convening of the conference committee to reconcile the two separate bills S 1315 and HB 68097 in Congress.

JFAV calls on all Filipino American organizations and mainstream allies to join the JFAV final push for recognition, justice and equity for 18,000 remaining veterans, their widows and relatives.

Mike Nailat, JFAV Mass Campaign Coordinator said, "This fight is about racism and the Filipino veterans victimized by such racist laws since 1946 when the rescission act was passed. The unjust law excluded 250,000 Filipino veterans from receiving benefits and recognition that they deserved as American World War II veterans.

Again the US Congress passed SB 1315 that excluded the Filipino veterans and another house bill that excludes the widows and relatives. The insult is they give them a quit claim that will give them one time money in exchange for quitting their claim as veterans," Nailat ended.

DAY OF ACTION on MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2008

Where: Everywhere

For years we have all joined together on Veterans Day in hopes to finally urge congress to fulfill the promises made to our elders who fought in WWII. Unfortunately, the struggle continues - this time however, the efforts of the youth were undermined.

We've contacted our representatives to pass S-1315 that had a specific clause that would allocate money to support the remaining veterans still alive today both in the US and the Philippines. The results: it passed, BUT WITHOUT FILIPINO VETERANS EQUITY BENEFITS.

This literally is an insult to our community. Please don't let generations of fighting be in vain and see the urgency in the situation at hand. Educate yourselves and forward to members of your respective organizations.

Samahang Pilipino has also generously announced to sponsor a forum open to the community to discuss an immediate plan of action. Congress only has a limited amount of time to make any changes to bills once passed - this is our chance to let them know that as an alliance WE DEMAND those benefits our Fil-Am veterans rightfully deserve.
