Check out the article "Filipino veterans of U.S. armed forces deserve benefits" in The Daily Bruin by columnist Samuel Sukaton!

Justice for Filipino American Veterans: Phone Script

Justice for Filipino American Veterans needs your help! Help S.1315 pass in the United States Congress so our WWII veterans can finally receive the equity they deserve!

1) Call one of two political targets:

- Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Democrat - San Francisco, CA)
Speaker of the House of Representatives
Washington Office: (202) 225-0100

- Senator Harry Reid (Democrat - Nevada)
Senate Majority Leader
Washington Office: (202) 224-3542

2) Introduction:

- "Hi can I speak to the legislative aide who handles veterans affairs?"

- If they ask who you are, answer:
- "This is ____(name)____ from ___(organization and/or school)___."
- Example: "This is Joe Bruin from Samahang Pilipino at UCLA."

3) Speak to the staff member or leave a message stating:

- "I'm calling because I would like Speaker Pelosi/Senator Reid to call Congress for a lame-duck session next week, November 17-20."

- "Also I would like the Speaker/Senator to support S.1315 - The Veterans' Benefits Enhancement Act - and call a joint conference committee to reconcile the bill's provision to provide full equity for Filipino Veterans."

- "Do you know the Speaker's/Senator's stance on S.1315 and FilVets and if she/he will push for it to be passed during next week's lame-duck session?"

4) Conclude with:

- Thank you for your time, and I look forward to checking in with the office for future progress with the bill.

Classes YOU Should Take Next Quarter...Yeah YOU!

November 13, 2008

Hello! It's that time to attempt to create that dream schedule you've always wanted. No class too early that requires coffee or a body defroster. No class too late that you'd have to discreetly pre-party during lecture in order be the engaging socialite at the clubs. In any case, culturally relevant education is all about making personal connections with you, and time is not a factor. It can be interesting, fun, inspiring, and enlightening to learn about how you as an individual are placed along the broad map of history. Here are some bomb-diggity courses that you should take:

Asian American Studies
  • 10- History of Asian Americans
  • 111- Asian Americans and War
  • 116- Asian American Social Movements
  • M129- Health Issues for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: Myth or Model?
  • 142B- Ethnocommunications II: Intermediate Creating Community Media
  • M165- Race, Gender, and Class
Filipino (languages)
  • 2- Introductory
  • 5- Intermediate

The 411 on this Friday's Samahang Pilipino Board Elections!

November 10, 2008

The Basics:
  • When are they? Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, 6-8 pm
  • Who can vote? Any general member who has attended at least 3 general meetings [2 prior to election day] this past term. Email ivp@samahang.org to see if you are eligible!

What We'll Be Voting on:
  • 10 of Samahang Pilipino's elected board positions. [The remaining 4 elected board positions have year-long terms because they oversee specific projects/programs that are year-long]
  • Board has the option of appointing people to the positions of Asian Pacific Coalition Representative and Youth Component Coordinator, as well as any assistants or other representatives.
  • Positions up for election: President, Internal Vice President, External Vice President, Administrative Coordinator, Financial Coordinator, Cultural Coordinator, Community Projects Coordinator, Activities Coordinator, Pinays Coordinator, Kabalikat Coordinator
  • Year-long Positions: Retention Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, Education Coordinator, SPCN Coordinator
  • General Board Responsibilities: Attend all Board meetings, general meetings and retreats; Aid in facilitating Board meetings, general meetings, activities and events; Assist other Board Members and General Members in planning, set-up, and execution of SAMAHANG PILIPINO activities, programs and projects; Assist in all general recruitment activities.
The Elections Process:

Nominations: Nominations are still open! Stop by 412 Kerckhoff Hall to nominate someone or nominate them at the elections on Friday!
  • A candidate must be nominated by a registered SAMAHANG PILIPINO member and this nomination must be seconded by a separate member.
  • SAMAHANG PILIPINO members may only nominate one person per position.
  • A list of nominated candidates will be posted in the SAMAHANG PILIPINO office [Kerckhoff 412]. Declining nominations: Any nominated candidate may withdraw from the ballot by striking his/her name or declining his/her candidacy at the election.
Time Breakdown [the night of elections]: Candidates may not forgo their speeches or question and answer portions
  • President: Nominator's Intro - 1 min, Speech - 5 min, Q & A - 3 min
  • Vice Presidents: Nominator's Intro - 1 min, Speech - 3 min, Q & A - 2 min
  • All Other Positions: Nominator's Intro - 30 sec, Speech - 2 min, Q & A - 1 min
Voting:
  • Officers shall be elected by majority vote (>50% + 1). No majority would result in run-off elections.
  • A motion can be made to vote by affirmation, however, one vote opposing this motion automatically calls to vote by secret ballot
  • For every position, you may vote YES/Candidate, No/None, or Abstain (an abstention IS NOT COUNTED in the final tally. Here's an example (6 people vote for fruits by majority. 3 vote mangos, 2 vote papayas, one abstains. Since 3/5 is >50%, Mangos wins. Note that the abstention is not included in the tally.])
  • All votes must also be submitted, including abstentions.

Some Ways To Prepare for Elections:
  • Look over the positions, their descriptions, and nominees
  • Think of questions to ask during the Q & A portion of elections [Things to think about: How does this position affect you? What kind of programs would you like to see? Are their platforms realistic?]
  • Talk to nominees/potential nominees prior to the elections. There’s only so much you can get out of 3-8 minutes!

Justice for Filipino American Veterans Parade this Saturday!

In honor of the upcoming Veteran's Day, we will have several events to honor and show our support for the Filipino Veterans of World War II. If you've heard of the issue or been to the last General Meeting, the 18,000 Filipino veterans that are left from World War II are still waiting for the benefits and recognition that were promised to them by the United States.

Show your support by coming out to the parade in Historic Pilipinotown this Saturday -- lots of schools from all over SoCal will be there! We will be providing rides on Saturday morning to go to the parade. Meet up at Sproul turnaround at 8:30 a.m. Be sure to RSVP to the Facebook invites and groups.

Also, before the parade, come have dinner with a Veteran @ De Neve Dining Hall this Friday. Get your grub on while you get a first-person perspective of the issue from the Veterans themselves.

And get ready for next week -- we'll be tabling and handing out petitions (download below) on the 'walk to let everyone know about our brave veterans. Be excited and we'll see you on Friday! Find out more information at the next General Meeting.
